Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's parish
I have now acknowledged that I really want one or the other of those endowed chairs I'm applying for. In fact, I want one of them in particular. So I'm frankly praying for it -- anything else would be dishonest anyway -- of course submitting to God's will.
Now one attraction of Prestigious U is its location near a thriving Episcopal parish that I would dearly love to join. I've been looking at their website. Is it possible to covet thy neighbor's parish? It's a heavily Rite One parish. The rector argues intelligently for traditional liturgical worship in his piece in the latest parish newsletter, and the music director invokes the complexity of polyphony and fugue in a well-conceived companion piece. There's a stewardship emphasis (it's that time of year), but one catches a sense of abundance rather than the usual whiff of desperation blossoming into panic. It would be a pleasure to tithe to such a place.
I really, really want that job.
